Please write an essay on one of the following:
Argumentative
1.) Should teenagers be allowed to have girlfriends/boyfriends at such a young age?
2.) Should euthanasia(mercy-killing) be legalised in Singapore?
Reporting / Narrative
3.) Describe a world event / festival / religious custom that you know of (using a third person’s view)
4.) Describe a travel destination, the beauty of the place, why people should go there, why is it special etc.. (using a third person’s view)
Brief Summary for Argumentative Essays:
- Always start with definations where possible. Identify the keywords to explain. E.g. Define what exactly is a teenager, what is euthanasia?
- After defining state your stand. Agree or disagree – to what extent? STRONGLY agree? Or agree to a certain extent?
- Provide a balanced arguement. There is always good and bad.
- The introduction discusses the flow of the essay, what you will talk about.
- The body is where your main content lies. Use different paragraphs to discuss the main points.
- Conclusion, summarise your whole article, RESTATE your point of view and suggest ways to improve the situation or discuss briefly some limitations of your point of view.
Brief Summary for Reports / Narratives:
- Do not use words like “I” or “We”
- Report in a general format through a third person’s voice. E.g. It is noted that Japan is famous for… (Instead of We know that Japan is for…)
- Make sure your report follows in a cohesive manner (either chronologically, by subject matter etc..)
- Use transition words to link points
- Keep it simple, yet detailed. (I.e. use simple words, but elaborate where necessary)
- Avoid JARGONS (always assume your reader is of the most basic level)
Thats it for now.
Cheers,
G
